Buying guide: Melt & Pour Soap Bases

Melt and pour soap base is ready-made soap that you melt, customise and pour. There is no lye to handle and no curing, so bars can be unmoulded and used the same day. It is the easiest way to start a handmade soap hobby or a small soap brand.

Choose a clear base for embeds and see-through bars, a white or goat milk base for creamy bars, and an SLS-free or sulphate-free base for gentle, sensitive-skin soaps. Buy a 1 kg pack to test and move to 5 kg, 10 kg or 20 kg packs for the best price per kilo.

How do I use melt and pour soap base?

Cut the base into cubes, melt it at 60 - 70 °C in a double boiler or in short microwave bursts, add up to 2% fragrance and a little colour, then pour into moulds. Unmould after 2 - 4 hours.

Which soap base is best for sensitive skin?

Pick an SLS-free or sulphate-free base, such as goat milk, aloe vera or shea butter bases, and use skin-safe fragrance at 1% or less.

Why is my soap sweating?

Glycerin in the base draws moisture from humid air. Wrap bars in shrink film or cling wrap as soon as they set and store them in a cool, dry place.
